Privacy Policy
MURAL is a recorder for sound and ideas, with the Collage effects engine built in. It works without an account, shows no advertising, contains no trackers, and has no server of its own. Your recordings are made, processed and kept on your phone.

Your recordings and the microphone
Recordings never leave your phone unless you send them somewhere yourself. Everything MURAL does to a recording — the Collage effects, trimming, pitch, stem separation, speech-to-text — happens on the device.
The microphone is live while you are on the Record page. MURAL keeps it open so the level meter moves before you press record; that is why iOS shows its microphone indicator. Nothing is saved until you press record, and nothing that passes through the meter is stored or sent anywhere.
Your location
If GEOTAG RECORDINGS is on, MURAL notes where you are at the moment you record and saves it with that take, on your phone, so takes can be shown on a map. It does not track you between recordings or keep a history of where you have been. You can turn geotagging off in Settings, or withhold location access in your device's Settings; MURAL works fully either way.
A location can travel with a recording when you export it. Takes exported as M4A, and the copies the cloud mirror makes, carry the take's location in their details; Map Room packages (.mtake) include it too. WAV exports do not. Turn geotagging off before recording if you will share a take and don't want its location in it.
The take map uses Apple Maps. While it is on screen, Apple receives requests for the map area you are looking at.
Photos, videos and files
When you load a video, MURAL uses Apple's photo picker. MURAL sees only the video you pick, never the rest of your library, and keeps only its sound. Files you import from Files, or send to MURAL from another app, are copied into MURAL on your phone.
MURAL never turns on the camera. iOS requires a camera entry for the framework MURAL uses for spatial audio capture; only the microphone is ever used. MURAL does not record motion data.
Optional services you choose
- Cloud mirror. If you turn on AUTO-MIRROR TO CLOUD, MURAL copies your takes into a folder you pick — on iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive or your phone. Those copies are then governed by that provider's own privacy policy. MURAL never sees your sign-in for that service.
- Speech-to-text. The first time you transcribe a recording, MURAL downloads the speech model (about 60 MB) from Hugging Face, which sees an ordinary download request. Transcription itself happens on your phone; no audio is uploaded. huggingface.co/privacy
- Sharing and export. When you export or share a take, it goes wherever you send it, through Apple's share sheet.
The Lock Screen and widgets
While recording, MURAL can show a Live Activity on your Lock Screen with the take's name and status, and its Home Screen widget shows your recent takes. That information is kept on your phone and shown only on your device.
What we never do
We do not collect, sell or rent your information. There is no advertising, no advertising identifier, no analytics inside the app, and nothing is shared with data brokers. MURAL does not ask for your contacts.
If you have chosen in iOS to share analytics with app developers, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. They do not identify you, and you can switch this off in your device's Settings under Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Keeping and deleting your information
We hold nothing about you, because nothing reaches us. Your recordings and settings stay on your phone until you delete them; deleting a take removes it, and deleting the app removes everything MURAL stored on the device. Copies you mirrored to a cloud folder or shared elsewhere stay there until you delete them.
Children
MURAL is suitable for all ages. It requires no account, contains no advertising, and collects nothing about anyone.
Your choices and rights
You can withdraw microphone or location access at any time in your device's Settings. Depending on where you live — including the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and California — you may have rights to see, correct or delete information held about you. MURAL holds none on our side, but email us with any question and we will answer.
Changes to this policy
If what MURAL does with information changes, this page changes with it, and so does the date at the top.
